Farrenc: Symphony No. 3

Copland: Quiet City (Trumpet: Noah Mallinson; Cor Anglais: Trudy Mansfield)

Beethoven: Symphony No. 1

Farrenc: Symphony No. 3: Louise Farrenc was a true pioneer, and one of the few women of the nineteenth century to leave us a permanent musical legacy. She was the first female full-time professor at the Paris Conservatoire, and she wrote two overtures and three symphonies.
Copland: Quiet City: Composed in 1939, this short evocative piece was originally intended to be the incidental music to a play by Irwin Shaw. The play’s main character was a lonely boy who turned to the trumpet as an escape from his troubles. We welcome Noah Mallinson to play the solo trumpet part.
Beethoven: Symphony No. 1: Deeply rooted in the symphonic traditions of Haydn and Mozart, this symphony broke new ground in many ways, and paved the way for Beethoven’s even more revolutionary works that followed.
